i don't get why it had to be cancelled. you have to make choices. kids play baseball in the summer, basketball, football, wrestling, plus summer vacation. you have to make choices...there will always be conflicts. no i am not bashing wrestling, there's always choices to make and you can't please everyone. also, this russel camp was free--what parent wouldn't like that--they weren't getting anything--no financial return whatsoever. the h.s. football camp cost money so probably did the basktball camp and i don't know about this wrestling camp. sorry, but to me we should be happy you have a group of junior high coaches who want to have a summer camp, charge nothing, do something extra. like i said, unheard of at the junior high level in aledo. also, there was nothing illegal about this camp.
people keep talking about rumors with these russels. are they true, probably not. people also hear things about zunkel, are they any more true. probably not.

8th grade "secret practice"
« Thread Started on Jul 30, 2009, 9:38pm »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've heard a couple unconfirmed reports of unauthorized practice for the 8th grade football team...without quite a few of the kids from Aledo. I know that this had come out during camp and Zunkel and Dennison both said that it doesn't happen. I'd hate to see something bad come of this because the coach has a complex and now there is a possibility that kids that aren't even there could get get punished...

There was an announced 7th and 8th grade camp at Mercer County Junior High this Tuesday through Thursday, but had to be cancelled because there was a wrestling camp or something like that. I heard it was a camp...not a secret practice, but as far as I know it was cancelled. You can have junior high camps in July, there is nothing illegal about that. It's just like high school camp--you have to call it camp, but for the most part, it's a practice.

Announced to who because a majority of the Aledo parents did not get the annoucement from any of the junior high coaches. They heard about it through the grapevine.

I know I heard Jon H. mention something on the radio on several days because he kept saying this is at Mercer County Junior High in Joy, not the high school and that it was free for just 7th and 8th graders. I know some parents were also upset saying the high school camp run by Zunkel wasn't well publicized either. It sounds like communication needs to improve in Golden Eagle land.

hey but you know what if it was illegal practice we better not say anything on here. we wouldn't want to let it get out.

well now!!
so the radio announced there was a practice or a clinic which ever it was on Tuesday, then it was announced on the radio it was canceled,So how come it was still held?????there were kids practicing with a coach on the following days at the M.C.football field in joy!!!"note to self i did say mercer county and not westmer or aledo!!!!!Anyways, what the heck are we not a team??are we still gonna be segregated??Why didn't the 7th grade coaches take part in this clinic??what does our new Head Football coach(GO MERCER COUNTY GOLDEN EAGLES & GOOD LUCK COACH ZUNKEL AND STAFF)have to say (I have heard that he told the Russel boys not to have this camp, clinic !!wow CAN YOU SAY INSUBORDINATION!!IN THE MILITARY YOU COULD BE SHOT FOR THIS !!!??Hell what about the athletic director What did he have to say??I feel this was done behind alot of peoples back and i just heard a rumor (and this is a rumor)that at the first night of practice/clinic/camp Coach Russel told the kids it was canceled but to come back tomorrow and we would practice!!!!!!!Wow could this be a rule violation?? hey why not just start practice today???you wont get into any trouble!!!! Well i feel this is crap and if these rumors are true something should be done!!!!!maybe a coach should be(i better not go there yet i will post later about that thought!!!!

it is not illegal to have junior high camp in July. there is no rule against this. conference rules say it is a no-no in august. i was told that this has been past practice for the russel's--that they had a junior high camp during july when they were coaching at westmer. personally, i don't see anything wrong with it. junior high coaches putting in exta work. this is a new concept. has this ever happened in aledo???? also, bum and melgren still run the mccarty stuff--i don't have a problem with this, but they do and I was told the russel's have actually been trying to run welter's stuff over at westmer. am i missing something here, are we saying there is a conspiracy to leave aledo kids out by the russel's or is there just a lack of communication???

I am saying there was very poor judgement used by the Russells!!!!also to fill you in on a little secret the head coach of the football program told them to cancel the practice/camp!!!!so if you wanna talk conspiracy about leaving kids out ,well if the shoe fits!!!Why would the radio cancel the practice/camp and then the Russel boys tell the kids to come back ?hmmmm!!!sounds a little fishy to me!!!!why would you go against the head coach(Zunkel) of the program????arrogance or stupidity???also you tell me does he already have his starting team picked??or why were just a few of the boys told to come back!!!!!If you think this is all rumors try asking a few of the higher ups>>>the A.D. or the head coach or even a few of the other coaches involved in the program???or heck why dont you do some research into this and find out if the boys who showed up for the later part of this were suppose to keep it hush hush!!!!and you say conspiracy against aledo hell no i say poor judgement that hurt all mercer county golden eagle football, for the sake of one or two coaches ego be real!!!!!also if melgren and rum run such a different offense why doesnt the upper part of the coaching regime step in and say we need to do this the way the rest of the M.C.G.E.football are going to do it!!!!!sorry about the spelling i was in a hurry!!!!i had a secret open meeting to get too!!!LOL

Here lies the problem. And no, I 'm not making a habit of posting here. There had been a junior high and high school wrestling camp scheduled for those times and dates that they wanted to hold the football camp. The wrestling camp had been scheduled since April. Many, I would guess 12-16 junior high boys had pre-registered. When Coach Zunkel realized this was a conflict he told the junior high football coaches to cancel it as did Brian Dennison. They were told to reschedule it so the boys could attend both. This was straight from Coach Z and Brian to me via phone conversations the previous Thursday night. So, any Aledo boys who asked Coach Finch or Coach Zunkel about the football camp, even non-wrestlers, were told it was cancelled. Then come Thursday, it's discovered by Coach Finch and some other parents that the football camp was held anyway. Made the high school coaches look bad, really bad, to the parents of the boys at wrestling camp, and those non-wrestlers who were mysteriously never called by the junior high coaches. I won't post anything I heard through the grapevine, only what I know is fact.

This is getting ridiculous. The Russell's, Bum, and Melgren considered having a camp at Joy the following week that H.S. had camp. They were trying to get the Aledo and Westmer boys meshing together and show them the facilities. It was scheduled for Tues thru Thurs evening because they thought they would be having more kids show up than that showed up for the Jr. high morning camp in Aledo ( rides ). They knew they had to have this that week because Prarieland conference rules so "no" to August. It was aired on WRMJ numerous times. Unfortunately there was also a wrestling camp going on at this exact time frame put on by Clayton Rush. Alot of possible football players were probably at the wrestling camp, so be it. The Russell's love wrestling. What I heard is that there were about 9 Aledo boys and about 5 Westmer boys that showed up at Joy. They said Russell let them throw the ball around, laugh and have fun playing 7 on 7 touch football for about an hour. He told them that they did not have to come back the remainder of the week because they would not be going into great detail about plays because alot of the other boys were at wrestling camp. This was the reason it was aired on WRMJ about cancelling camp. He did tell them that if they had fun and would like to come back for more 7 on 7 that he would show up, and asked the kids if they knew anyone that was not at wrestling camp to ask and bring them along. If any one truly knows the Russell's they are just trying to get the kids meshing. I know for a fact that they are not political in playing kids in any way. This was not a conspiracy, just a chance for the kids to meet each other and throw the pigskin around. I myself can't wait for this years football to start. I think the Russells' will do a great job, I've never heard any complaints before about them. They do their homework "scouting". Which will probably be a first for us at Jr. High level. And besides they only have to win 1 game to be better than our team from last year. I see them winning many while still playing everyone. And having fun all season while learning the advanced plays that Welter ran. Just my 2 cents.

thank you gail for clarifying a few things also thank you golden eagle fan for filling us in on the Russells i hope they are as genuine as you say,but this doesnt make the parents of those who knew nothing about the camp feel any better about this situation!!Put yourself in their shoes and see how it looks.and their were several mcge's from joy newboston and kiethsburg who knew nothing about the practice so lets not make this an aledo westmer thing because we need to get together and becomew a united team and it must start at the COACHING level and work down!!!

 New Football Coach
« Result #10 on Apr 21, 2009, 10:37pm »

April 21, 2009--The Mercer County Golden Eagles have their first head football coach. It's suburban Chicago native Nat Zunkel. He spent last year as head coach of the Mattoon Green Wave in eastern Illinois, his only head coaching stint. Zunkel also has assistant coaching experience at Elmhurst York, Homewood Flossmoor, and Kankakee. He and his wife Sandy have three young sons, ages 6, 5 and 4. Zunkel is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan and received his masters degree from Olivet Nazarene in Kankakee, Illinois. He was officially offered the job today and accepted the position. He will teach social studies at Mercer County High School.
