Wow, Weinke would be a great hire. Bring his kid with who's a D-1 prospect, then that will be a way to start off the new school.
Thanks for the memories Coach.

Here is an article about Cully.
Welter leaving Aledo with `great memories' Posted Online: March 10, 2009, 9:54 pm Comment on this story | Print this story | Email this story By Steve Tappa, stappa@qconline.com The Mercer County Golden Eagles are searching for a new head football coach without having played a game yet.
Cullen Welter, the state title-winning coach at Aledo the last 11 seasons, won't be taking over, as expected, next fall's consolidated program between the Aledo and Westmer high schools.
Instead, the 39-year-old is moving his family closer to his boyhood home in Central Illinois, to take the open job at Class 4A Monticello.
The Monticello school board approved Welter's hiring Tuesday night after officials there pursued the grad of nearby Mahomet-Seymour about their football opening this winter.
Welter met with his returning players Tuesday afternoon to confirm the move, and turned in his resignation with Aledo officials.
"It was the hardest decision I've ever made in my life,'' Welter said about leaving a program that never missed the state playoffs during his tenure, reaching five state title-games, and winning three. "There were a lot of sleepless nights. We've debated it, and debated it, and continue to debate it. I originally turned it down before I reconsidered and accepted.
"We've had 11 wonderful years at Aledo, and it's a place we're going to miss immensely. I've been taken on a great ride by this community and its kids. We made a lot of memories together. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to be a part of it. It's hard to say goodbye.''
Aledo athletic director Brian Dennison said there's no firm timeline to name Welter's replacement, but a selection committee will form soon, sift through resumes and hopefully begin interviewing candidates later this month.
"We don't want to see Cully go,'' Dennison said. "But we've already got some irons in the fire. This is something we knew could be a possibility for a couple of weeks, so we've already heard from some interested candidates.''
Dennison said the consolidation has at least three teaching positions open -- driver's education, social studies and math.
"We've got some big shoes to fill. But we should get a good (candidate),'' Dennison said. "We'll be able to accomodate a lot of candidates with our job openings.
"It's a good opportunity. These kinds of jobs don't open up too often. Usually the job comes open for reasons other than having a successful program year-in and year-out.''
Indeed, the Monticello position opened for two of the usual reasons -- a program coming off an 0-9 season, with a longtime head coach (John Beccue) retiring.
"They haven't done as well lately in football, so it will be a challenge, but they were a powerhouse in the not-too-distant past,'' Welter said, pointing to 52 wins and four straight state playoffs between 1988-92. "The school's a bit larger (4A instead of Aledo's 3A), but Monticello is a community similar to Aledo.''
Including four seasons at Colfax Ridgeview (23-18), Welter owns a career coaching record of 136-40 in 15 seasons. Aledo won 84 percent of its games under Welter (113-22), including Class 2A state championships in 1998, 2001 and 2002. Aledo also reached the state finals in 2005 (2A) and 2006 (1A).
"I'm excited about the consolidation,'' Welter said. "I was really looking forward to being a part of continuing the success we've enjoyed at Aledo, and building a new tradition.
"But this is a chance to get back to the Bloomington/Champaign area, where we have a lot of relatives and family. The reason we came to Aledo was to get close to my wife's family, and now we're moving to get closer to the other part of our family.
"My oldest son (Tyus) is in the fifth grade now, so we figured, if we were ever going to move, now would be the time, otherwise, we'd have stayed for the long haul.''
Welter and wife Angie have four young children -- Tyus and son Trey (age 3), and daughters Aliyah (third grade) and Kyara (age 5).
"I don't want to put any pressure on the next coach, but he's going to be getting some great kids, who want to work hard and have success,'' Welter said. "And, he's getting the support of an entire community that wants the same thing and is willing to do whatever is necessary.''

article from wrmj
March 11, 2009--One of the leading candidates to replace Cully Welter as head football coach of the Mercer County Golden Eagles is Stan Wienke. The former Tuscola coach tells WRMJ he would like the position. Wienke has coached for 29 seasons, including 18 at Tuscola where he was 149 and 51 with a state title and state runner-up. Wienke says his youngest son Jud, a 6'4, 225 pound sophomore, would also enroll at Mercer County High School. Wienke spent last season at Waterloo West in Iowa, where he was 3 and 6. His oldest son John, is a quarterback at Iowa. Click here for Stan Wienke interview.

What's that going to say for Anderson?

Anderson is an athlete. Could be a good qb battle, or would you try at WR or TB? Lots of possibilities. Let the best kid play, not because of the name on his back.

this is a wierd story. wienke also wanted the monticello job, but his son was going to play at Tuscola if he got that job, which is in the same conference. he's already enrolled down there, according to another board. that tells me that Monticello's talent level must be way down. why would he want to coach against his own son and why would his kid not go there with him, but now he says he'll bring him to Aledo. it will be good for Welter if Wienke does get the Aledo job because he won't have coach against another Wienke as QB. bizarre.
also, Wienke will no doubt be the QB for the Golden Eagles. he's compared to his brother or even better, he'll be the QB--that's a no brainer. 6'4, 225 and played QB at the 4a level in Iowa.
no disrespect to Welter, but we'll be in a better position the next two seasons if indeed the Wienke's are in Aledo.

This just poses a question for myself.
If hired, does Wienke just stay for 2 seasons and is Aledo/Mercer Co in this position again in the Spring of 2011?

yes good question bloom. i like brett im freinds with his whole family but you have to play the best. if weinke is the best well so be it but i think brett would be good where ever they played him with his speed wouldn't he be good in the WR area.

Weinke has been coaching a long time, maybe after Jud is done, he will retire? That wouldnt be good to come to a new program and leave 2 years later. Hopefully whomever they hire has a long-term, successful outlook with MC.

To Answer your question had Weinke gotten the Monticello job Im pretty sure they would remain living in their home in Tuscola. With the economy the way it is right now looking for a new home might be tough so Stan would probably make the commute from Tuscola to Monticello. Jud wouldnt be able to play at Monticello without moving into the district. Obviously if Weinke gets the job at Aledo the whole family will be moving with him. To comment on someone elses post I agree you got to wonder how long Weinke would be at Aledo. He isnt the youngest coach on the block. Maybe Jud will follow in Jons footsteps and go to Iowa who knows. I have a buddy on staff at Monticello they have some good athletes and their other boys sports are pretty good it was just time for a new voice and new system down that way. Im sure Welter will help give that program a facelift right away and turn them into a contender year in and year out in the Okaw conference.
